Month after month, Netflix holds on to the crown as the streaming service with the widest variety of original content for every audience. For kids there’s CoCoMelon, for grown-ups there’s raunchy dating shows like Sneaky Links, and for everybody else there’s… everything else. May is a packed month, with tons of good-looking stuff debuting. Here’s our guide to the hottest new shows and movies on the streaming service in May.
The Devil’s Plan: Season 2 (May 6)
Most reality TV shows don’t do a lot to tax your brainstem, but Korean hit The Devil’s Plan is the outlier. A carefully selected group of people, all with different mental skills, are locked up together in an elimination game where they’ll have to think outside of the box and outwit each other to earn “pieces,” currency that both ensures their survival and can also be used for various purposes. It’s a thrilling watch that’s worth a binge.
Cast: Kang Ji-yeong, Kyuhyun, Kim Ha-rin
Genre: Korean, Competition Reality TV, Reality TV
Rating: TV-14
IMDb Rating: 8.3/10
Untold: The Liver King (May 13)
Influencers aren’t just bad for your mental health, they’re bad for your body. A new documentary, Untold: The Liver King, traces the rise and fall of the grotesquely vascular supplement seller who made his fortune by chowing down on slabs of raw organ meat on Instagram, YouTube, and other platforms. His “Ancestral Lifestyle” promised men that they could have the body of their dreams with 11 simple rules, but when it was revealed that the Liver King spent $11,000 a month on anabolic steroids, it all came crashing down.
American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden (May 14)
The attack on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, will go down in history as a pivotal moment in American history, and the architect of that terrorism as one of history’s greatest villains. American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden is a new three-part docuseries that has never-before-seen footage of the efforts to track down the Al-Qaeda leader and bring him to a watery grave.
Fear Street: Prom Queen (May 23)
Goosebumps legend R.L. Stine’s horror series for more grown-up readers is becoming almost as big a success, with the fourth Fear Street movie set to hit Netflix in May. Set in 1988, the hot topic at Shadyside High is which one of the popular “It Girls” is going to win the crown at that year’s Senior Prom. But when a dark horse candidate emerges, bodies start to stack up and things get messy very fast.
