The Download
- You can make free international calls with apps like WhatsApp, Skype, and Google Voice from your phone or computer.
- Always check data usage on free calling apps to avoid unexpected charges or data overages.
Need to call internationally? We’ve got you covered. We recommend these apps because they provide free international calling options to at least one, if not more, countries. Some also offer chat features so you can stay connected with quick messages, share photos, or videos between calls.
Even though these are free apps, be careful! The plan you choose might have other aspects to it that could have data limits and you might still get charged for overages if you’re not paying attention.
WhatsApp is a messaging and voice call app for Android and iOS that uses data instead of your cellular plan’s voice minutes. You can make voice and video calls to people worldwide for free, though it’s important to monitor your monthly data usage. The app also supports group calls.
WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption for all messages and calls using the app. However, if you’re communicating with someone using an older version, your conversations won’t be encrypted.
There are also web and desktop versions, meaning you can use WhatsApp on your computer. You can’t, however, use this app to call emergency services such as 911 in the U.S.

FaceTime is a free voice and video call app available on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac. You can call people over Wi-Fi or mobile data globally, except for a few countries.
To set up an account, you need an Apple ID/Apple Account. To contact friends, you need the phone number or email associated with their Apple Account. You can also switch to a FaceTime call during a regular phone call as long as you both have accounts.
If you’re using iOS 15 or later, you can also invite Android users to join by sending them a FaceTime link.

Google Voice is a mostly free VoIP service. You can forward up to six numbers to your account, with each ringing before going to voicemail.
If you turn on transcription, you can receive emails or text messages with transcripts of your voicemails. In addition to Android and iOS apps, you can also use Google Voice in a desktop browser.
If you’re in the U.S., most calls to the U.S. and Canada are free. Rates for calls to other regions vary. Google Voice calling rates are available on their website.

Skype
What We Like
Free calls to Skype users.
Send video or voice message if call missed.
Uses end-to-end encryption.
Skype is a VoIP service that has been available since 2003, and it remains a convenient way to make free national and international calls. You can use it for voice and video calls, as well as group calls with up to 100 participants for free when communicating with other Skype users.
Charges apply if you contact someone outside of Skype, but the company is upfront about the rates, and relatively cheap, unlimited monthly packages are available.
Skype cannot be used to contact emergency services like WhatsApp and other data-based services because it cannot accurately determine your location. Besides Android and iOS, you can also make international calls from your PC, Mac, or web browser.

Viber is another VoIP service providing free voice and video calls to other users, and affordable rates for calls to landlines and mobile phones. You just need a valid phone number to register, which your contacts can use to find you on the app. Viber offers both mobile and desktop apps.
While Viber isn’t as popular in the U.S. as WhatsApp and Skype, it has a strong presence in other parts of the world, such as Eastern Europe. Like its competitors, it allows you to send messages and share photos and other media through the app.
