Time for an Upgrade? Netflix to End Support for Older Amazon Fire TV Devices

Netflix will soon end support for older Amazon Fire TV media-streaming devices.

The streamer has been notifying affected users about the change via email, TechRadar reports. Starting June 3, Netflix will not be compatible with three Fire TV models: Fire TV (2014), Fire TV Stick (2014), and Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote (2016).

If you have one of these devices, you’ll have to look for alternatives to continue watching Netflix titles. A Fire TV upgrade, thankfully, won’t cost you much. The 2024 Fire TV Stick HD is $34.99, though you can get it for $19.99 right now. (Roku just updated its streaming devices, too.)

Customers with older Fire TV devices “may be eligible for a discount on a newer Fire TV Stick and can contact customer service for more information,” Amazon tells The Verge.

Amazon hasn’t released updates for these aging devices recently, while Netflix has consistently updated its audio and video codecs. Also, there are rumors about Amazon ditching Android and using a new OS to run its Fire TV devices.

Netflix also rolled out a major overhaul of its user interface on May 19. The shortcuts have moved from the left of the screen to the center, up top. The tiles are getting a revamped callout that provides a preview of the show/movie’s synopsis, runtime, awards, Top 10 history, or cast members. And recommendations for each tile you swipe across will change based on your previous activity.

On mobile, Netflix will also test a TikTok-style vertical feed for discovery and reportedly leverage OpenAI’s ChatGPT to let you search for content based on your moods. Instead of typing a movie or show’s name, you could use conversation phrases like “I want something funny and upbeat” to find your dose of entertainment.
