‘Quad Motor’ Rivian EVs Have Some Serious Power—If You Can Afford One

Orders are now open for Rivian’s top-of-the-line Quad Motor R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV. But you’ll need a six-figure budget to bring one of them home.

The four motors deliver “instant power,” Rivian says. They adjust torque independently at each wheel for “precise traction control in all conditions.” The result is an eye-popping 1,025 horsepower, 1,198 pound-feet of torque, and 2.6 seconds to go from 0–60 mph. It can go half a mile in just 10.5 seconds.

The launch editions start at $119,990 for the R1T Quad and $125,990 for the R1S Quad. That’s a serious upcharge—around $40,000—over the base starting prices of $70,990 for the R1T and $76,990 for the R1S. You can also lease it for a little under $2,000 a month. Delivery takes 2-3 weeks, according to the ordering page.

The EPA-estimated range is 374 miles, which is a lot for such a large, high-performance vehicle. It goes up to 400 miles in conservative mode.

“We set out to build a vehicle that could do things others can’t—from whipping around hairpin turns to instantly adjusting performance based on your preferences,” says Rivian. “Featuring our elevated interior, Quad is like a luxe basecamp on wheels that’s incredibly fun to drive.”

The Quad comes with some premium tech, including a lifetime subscription of Connect+ and Rivian Autonomy Platform+. The Quad also has a NACS charge port that can connect to over 21,000 Tesla Superchargers. Rivian boasts some of the best tech in the EV business, with fun features like the ability for the passenger to Google Cast content to their dash.

“Engineered for extremes,” the Quad is getting two more performance updates in September. The first is Kick Turn, which make sit easier to steer in tight off-road conditions. It allows you to make tighter turns by pressing a button, and “smartly adjusts the power inside the wheels” for more precise control.

RAD Tuner is the second feature. It gives you more control over the vehicle’s behavior through “intuitive sliders,” which allow you to fine-tune the vehicle’s handling and save the settings.

This is all probably overkill, but the Rivian Quad is a great option for deep-pocketed EV lovers looking to push the limits outdoors. In a sense, Rivian is biding time here by offering more options on its existing vehicles while it works on its next model, the $45,000 R2.
