Every week, Netflix drops a ton of new content for viewers to stream from studios all over the world. Some of it’s good, some of it’s… not for me. Watching all of it would take you a ton of time, so I decided to start our Friday by recommending three top picks for the weekend and week to come. Schedule your viewing around these shows and movies, and I’ll be watching along with you. This time around we’ve got the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first TV series, music documentaries both charming and terrifying, and much more. The full list is below.
This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks
Piece By Piece (June 7)
We’ve seen some oddball music biopics in recent years—most notably that Robbie Williams monkey movie—but Piece by Piece, which recounts the life of megaproducer Pharrell Williams entirely in Lego, is one of a kind. With voice work from many of the stars he’s worked with, including Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, and Snoop Dogg, it’s a charming and visually fun weekend pick, if a bit fluffy.
Director: Morgan Neville
Cast: Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, Kendrick Lamar
Genres: Animation, Biopic
Rating: PG
IMDb Rating: 6.9/10
Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy (June 10)
For a music story that’s a little less uplifting, this installment of the streaming service’s Trainwreck documentary series takes us back to November 2021, when Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas, left 10 people dead after the crowd rushed the stage, crushing and injuring dozens. The flick boasts interviews with survivors, as well as event staff and paramedics trying to put all the pieces together.
FUBAR: Season 2 (June 12)
Arnold Schwarzenegger has plenty of free time now that he’s not governing California, so FUBAR is back for a second season. The action-comedy casts him as a CIA agent who discovers that his daughter is also an undercover operative, and when they’re forced to work together on cases things get more than a little awkward. It’s dumb but fun, and the new season sees Carrie-Ann Moss added to the cast, so that’s always welcome.
