Paramount Plus Is Dropping Its Showtime Name, But Not the Movies or TV Shows

Another streaming service is changing part of its name, and this time it’s one of the packages from Paramount. The brand has changed its top-tier subscription from Paramount Plus With Showtime to a new title of Paramount Plus Premium.

The move is happening because Paramount is also bringing a limited amount of its Showtime produced programming to its cheaper tier. The brand said that made the name change necessary, but it’s likely Paramount believed there’s a benefit to making the name structure easier for new customers to understand.

Paramount wants to make it clear to its customers that Showtime programming won’t be leaving the service. It said in a support post, “Showtime programming remains an important part of Paramount+, and is still prominently represented on the service!”

The pricing remains the same with the most expensive tier of Paramount Plus costing $12.99 a month or $119.99 per year. There’s an Essential plan available for $7.99 a month, but there are also ads included. Some Showtime content is available here, but it’s much more limited than the ad-free package.

This move comes soon after we saw Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) switch its streaming service name back to HBO Max. The streamer launched as HBO Max in 2020 before moving over to just the name Max in 2023. Many criticized the move at the time as the brand appeared to distance itself from the HBO name. WBD said it was necessary as the streaming service expanded to cater to more types of programming including documentaries from the Discovery arm of the business.

Back in May, WBD decided to move back to HBO Max, a little under two years since the original name change. The move prompted even stars of some of the network’s biggest shows to make fun of the flip-flopping between names. In a trailer for the second season of Peacemaker, John Cena can be seen talking with his colleagues about his confusion of whether to call it HBO Max or not.
