Music streaming services are now one of the key ways people find new music, and Spotify is often experimenting with new tools to help you find your next favorite artist. The latest experiment is a new feature to help you specify subgenres in the company’s own algorithmically generated recommendations.
Reddit user kwabb found the feature, as reported by Android Authority, that lets you specify the subgenre you want to listen to within the company’s Made for You Mixes. Normally, a Made for You mix is generated by Spotify bringing together your favorite artists and new recommendations within a genre. Examples include Jazz Mix, Pop Mix, Rock Mix, or Soul Mix.
The example shared by kwabb includes their own R&B Mix, which now includes chip buttons to specify a subgenre. Those include Alternative R&B, Neo Soul, and Pop R&B. That’s more specific than Spotify ever gets with its playlists.
Pressing on one of these chips will regenerate the whole playlist around that specific subgenre, rather than it just filtering out songs that don’t make sense. The user says, “It’s successful in showing songs that aren’t the same old recommendations.”
The user has the update running on an iPhone. In PCMag’s own testing, we weren’t able to replicate the feature on an Android device or PC. Some other users on Reddit suggest it’s only appearing one of their playlists rather than across the whole service. One user says they’ve found it working on their Discover Weekly mix with wider genres included like EDM, Hip Hop, R&B, Reggaeton, and Techno.

It appears this may be a gradual test for Spotify and we may see a more official rollout to everyone’s service in the future. You’ll spot this at the top of your playlists underneath the play button and before the first track if you do have access to the new feature.
