Mountainhead, The Mortician: What’s New to Watch on Max the Week of May 30, 2025

Of all the streaming services, Max has gone through some of the biggest changes since it launched, and it’s about to get a rebrand back to HBO Max this summer. Whatever you call it, it delivers a serious selection of shows and movies from all of its partner networks in 2025, including HBO, Discovery, Food Network, and more. New shows and movies are constantly being added, so here’s my three top picks for this weekend and the week ahead, plus everything being added below.

This Week on Max: PCMag’s Picks

Mountainhead (May 31)

The new film from Jesse Armstrong, the creator of Succession, plumbs some familiar ground with its cast of rich people trying to get richer in the face of disaster. This weekend, watch Steve Carell, Ramy Youssef, Jason Schwartzman, and Cory Michael Smith play a quartet of one percenters who meet at a remote mountain lodge during a financial crisis, each with their own plans and schemes to come out on top. Early reviews have been positive.

  • Director: Jesse Armstrong

  • Cast: Steve Carell, Ramy Youssef, Jason Schwartzman

  • Genre: Comedy, Drama

  • Rating: TV-MA

The Mortician (June 1)

Starting the weekend off is a new three-episode documentary series that’ll hit for Six Feet Under fans. The Mortician tells the shocking tale of the Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena, California. When a young family member takes over the business, ethics go out the window as corpses are defiled, organs are sold, gold teeth are pulled, and people are maybe even murdered.

  • Director: Joshua Rofe

  • Cast: David Sconce

  • Genre: Documentary

  • Rating: TV-MA

Parthenope (June 6)

Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino is one of the leading lights of that country’s industry, and Parthenope looks poised to bring him to a worldwide audience. Celeste Dalla Porta stars as the titular Parthenope, a young woman attending college who starts an illicit relationship with a professor that leads to a number of striking choices in her life. When it screened at Cannes, the audience gave the film a 9.5-minute standing ovation.

  • Director: Paolo Sorrentino

  • Cast: Celeste Dalla Porta, Gary Oldman, Silvio Orlando

  • Genre: Drama

  • Rating: R

  • IMDb Rating: 6.6/10
