Microsoft and Xbox are collaborating again—this time to produce a “limited-edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox,” according to Meta. There’s not a lot circulating in the rumor mill, but here’s what we’ve gathered about the first-ever VR Headset for Xbox.

When Could the Xbox VR Headset Be Released?

There’s no confirmed release date for the Xbox VR Headset and not much chatter about it.

Past Meta Quest headsets (Meta Quest 2, Pro, and Meta Quest 3) were all announced in October, but we haven’t heard a peep yet.

We might hear more at the Meta Connect event this fall, on September 17 to September 18.

Is Meta Even Considering the Release of Any Kind of Xbox VR Headset?

Yes, Meta confirmed its plans for an Xbox-inspired Meta Quest in April 2024—when it also announced Horizon OS.

At the same time, Meta said that Asus was also developing a VR headset based on Horizon OS, and Lenovo had plans for developing mixed-reality devices too.

In addition to the Horizon OS blog, Mark Zuckerburg shared clues about the look and functionality we might see in the Xbox VR Headset in a spring 2024 Instagram stream:

• Signature Xbox design: The image Meta offered in its announcement about Meta Horizon OS shows a black and green VR headset, a hallmark color scheme across Xbox gaming consoles.
• Access to more content: Another way Meta Horizon OS is expanding to third parties is by opening its Store to developers with software that meets basic requirements. The ultimate goal is that users will have access to and can play games on any headset built on Horizon OS.
• Game Pass and Xbox controller: Zuckerberg also alluded to the inclusion of Game Pass and an Xbox controller shipped with Xbox Horizon OS headsets.
