Is Samsung Even Considering the Release of Any Kind of Phone?

Companies like Samsung are in the habit of releasing new phones every year. The Z series foldables have seen new models annually since 2019, and there’s no reason to think that will change in 2025.

Samsung might not have officially reported on the Z Fold 7 yet, but that’s standard. It typically waits until the summer to make its foldable announcements, so the pattern is predictable.

Unless something major changes behind the scenes, it’s safe to assume that a new Fold is coming.

Our Thoughts on Potential Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Features

Nothing is official yet. We should be very clear on that—these are just rumors for now. However, leaks and past trends give us a pretty decent idea of what Samsung could be working on for the next Fold. Here are some possibilities:

The next Galaxy Z Fold might have a larger screen and be slimmer and lighter. And if a report from the Korea Economic Daily is accurate, it could also be as thin as Samsung’s S series phones when folded. The report says Samsung engineers have been tasked with making the phone “similar to the bar-type Galaxy S24’s thickness of 7.7 millimeters.”

This sounds doable at a glance, considering the downward trend we’ve seen so far. The first Galaxy Fold (from 2019) sits at 17.1mm, and the latest model is just over 12mm thick. But this means that, when unfolded, the phone would be half the thickness of the 8.6mm Galaxy S24 Ultra. Only time will tell if Samsung pulls it off.

The company is also reportedly trimming off some weight, but we don’t know how much. Durability is the most obvious concern as a phone gets thinner and lighter, so it will be interesting to see how Samsung tackles this.

Despite its slimmed-down profile, the Z Fold 7 might also manage to pack a bigger screen. Rumors say the foldable display could get as big as 8 inches (the Z Fold 6 is 7.6 inches). The display might use blue phosphorescent OLED (aka PHOLED) instead of blue fluorescent, which could ultimately reduce the size of the battery, supporting the rumor of a thinner device.

Given its purported release date, the Z Fold 7 will run the Android 16-based One UI 8 operating system. Compared to all the other versions of One UI, this one introduces some new AI features for Now Bar and Now Brief, QR code scanning for Auracast devices, and better file sharing via Quick Share.

We’re also hearing about a new 200MP main camera. This would be a huge improvement over the existing Fold’s 50MP camera.
