How to Use Waze in Android Auto

What to Know

  • Open Android Auto on your phone, tap Customize launcher, and make sure Waze isn’t hidden.
  • Open the app and go to menu > View profile > Home and work to add those addresses.
  • Attach the phone to the car and open Waze on the vehicle’s screen to start using it.

This article describes how to use Waze in your car via Android Auto.

How to Set Up Waze for Android Auto

Using the Waze Android Auto app is incredibly simple. Like most apps for Android Auto, this one requires no setup. However, you’ll want to follow these steps if you don’t yet have Waze on your phone or if you do, but it’s not showing up in Android Auto.

  1. Install Waze if you don’t have it yet. It’s free on the Play Store.

  2. Search the Settings app for Android Auto. Depending on your phone, it might exist as its own app; search for it like you would find any app, and then open it.

  3. Tap Customize launcher.

  4. Add the app to Android Auto. To do this, find Waze in the list and make sure it has a check next to it. This allows it to be visible when you use Android Auto.

Add a Work or Home Destination in Waze

This part isn’t necessary, but it is useful. If you plan to use Waze as your primary navigation app in Android Auto, you’ll want easy access to turn-by-turn directions to your home or work. Doing this lets you say “take me home” or “take me to work” rather than stating the entire address every time.

  1. Tap the three lines to open the menu.

  2. Select View profile.

  3. Choose Home and work.

  4. Tap the pencil next to Home, then enter your home address.

  5. Repeat the previous step for Work.

How to Use Waze With Android Auto While Driving

Waze for Android Auto works the same in your car as it does on your phone. You’ll see and hear alerts about things like road conditions, traffic, and accidents. You can use voice commands to start and end navigation, to answer calls, and more.

  1. Connect your phone to your car to use Android Auto.

  2. Tap Waze on the home screen.

  3. Say, “Hey, Google,” and then tell Android Auto where you want to go. Here are some examples:

    • “Take me home.”
    • “Drive to 188 Main St, Burlington, Vermont.”
    • “Directions to Pizza Hut.”
    • “Navigate to work.”

In some cases, you’ll be given a list of suggested locations and you need to tap the one you want before navigation starts.

  4. If you use a touchscreen console and prefer to type, put your car in park first, then tap the search field at the top of the screen and enter your destination.

  5. To report traffic incidents, tap the report button, choose the type (traffic, police, crash, etc.), and then tap Submit.
