The Download
- Use the Settings app to check Android for updates or see the version that’s currently installed.
- On a Google Pixel, go to System > Software updates > System update to upgrade Android.
- On a Samsung Galaxy, updates are installed through the Software update page.
This article explains how to update the Android OS on Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and other Android devices.
How to Update Android
You should see a prompt to install a new version of Android whenever one is available for your device. Follow the on-screen prompts or walk through these steps to check for an update manually:
Before you start, there are a few things you should do:
- Back up your Android device
- Ensure it’s charged to at least 50 percent, or plug it in
- Check that there’s enough space on your phone
- Connect to Wi-Fi unless you have an unlimited data plan
Update a Pixel Phone
To get the latest version of Android supported by your Pixel, use the built-in Settings app, like this:
Launch the Settings app.
Go to System > Software updates.
Tap System update > Check for update. Follow any other prompts you see to download and install the update.
Update a Galaxy Phone
New Android versions can be installed on Samsung Galaxy smartphones through the Settings app. Here’s how it works:
Open the Settings app.
Tap Software update. It’s toward the bottom of the page.
Select Download and install to check for a new Android OS. Follow the on-screen prompts if a new version is available.
Notice the option to auto-download new Android versions on Wi-Fi. Allowing a new Android OS update to download in the background as soon as its available speeds up the overall updating process.
Which Android Version Do I Have?
You don’t need to update the Android OS if you’re already running the latest version or if your device is no longer eligible for major Android updates. Follow these directions to check which version is installed on your device.
Find Pixel Android Version
Much like updating your Pixel, checking its Android version is possible through the Settings app.
Open Settings.
Scroll down and tap About phone.
Scroll down to the Device details section and look at the number under Android version. You can tap it to view more details, like which day the last security update was installed.
Find Galaxy Android Version
The directions for Samsung Galaxy phones are similar to Google Pixels, though the interface might vary between versions.
Open Settings.
Tap About phone toward the bottom of the screen.
Select Software information.
Locate the number under Android version to see which version of Android is installed. Also here is the One UI version (Samsung’s custom skin).
Updating Other Android Devices
If you have a device that’s not from Google or Samsung, the process to update the Android OS is similar but not the exact same. Look through, or search, the Settings app of your device to find the option to update Android.
Here’s an example of what it looks like to update an Android tablet:
Open the Settings app.
Select System > System update.
Choose Check for update to force the device to look for a new version of Android.
If you want the latest OS as soon as it’s available, you might consider rooting your phone, which lets you access updates when you want them. You’ll also be able to access features not yet available to unrooted Android devices.
When Can My Phone Get the Latest Android Version?
If you own a Google Pixel, you’re at the front of the line for Android updates. Pixel devices receive new OS versions as soon as they’re available, often within the first few days of release.
For other Android phones, the timeline depends on the manufacturer and carrier. Newer flagship models tend to get priority, while older or budget devices may face delays or might not receive updates at all.
In most cases, Android updates are rolled out by your wireless carrier. If you’re using a non-Pixel phone, your wait time will depend on when your carrier starts the rollout. The older your hardware, the longer the delay, and, again, some devices may be left behind entirely.
If you’re unsure, checking with your manufacturer or carrier can clarify when (or if) you can expect an update. Google might also include compatibility information on its website when announcing a new Android update.
