Batman, Thin Man, Porky Pig: What’s New to Watch on HBO Max the Week of June 27, 2025

Of all the streaming services, HBO Max has gone through some of the biggest changes since it launched Whatever you call it, it delivers a serious selection of shows and movies from all of its partner networks in 2025, including HBO, Discovery, Food Network, and more. New shows and movies are constantly being added, so here are my three top picks for this weekend and the week ahead, plus everything being added below.

This Week on Max: PCMag’s Picks

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (June 27)

The journey of The Day the Earth Blew Up is a dire illustration of today’s media landscape. Produced by Warner Bros. as the first fully animated and theatrically released Looney Tunes movie ever, it was originally supposed to premiere on Max before being inexplicably shelved, picked up by third-party distributor Ketchup for theaters, and then made its way back to Max, confusing everybody. Nevertheless, it’s a fun and visually zany flick where Daffy Duck and Porky Pig have to save the world from a nefarious alien plot involving zombie-creating chewing gum.

  • Directors: Peter Browngardt

  • Cast: Eric Bauza, Candi Milo, Peter McNicol

  • Genre: Comedy

  • Rating: PG

  • IMDb Rating: 7.0/10

The Thin Man Series (July 1)

One of the best reasons to subscribe to Max is their dedication to classic films. While you’ll struggle to find anything older than the 1980s on Netflix or Hulu, Max consistently brings up all-time bangers. Case in point: July has ever film in the amazing Thin Man series, starring William Powell as retired private detective Nick Charles and Myrna Loy as his wife, Norah. The banter and chemistry between those two is some of the best ever filmed, and these flicks still hold up almost a century later.

Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League (July 3)

One of the best things about the DC Universe is its willingness to explore alternate versions of its iconic heroes. 2018’s Batman Ninja was an absolute blast, following Bruce Wayne as a fish out of water in feudal Japan, discovering that his old foes have become lords of their own domains and must be toppled. Vs. Yakuza League goes even bigger, as the Dark Knight returns to his own time only to find the timeline totally altered and the Justice League missing.

  • Directors: Junpei Mizusaki, Shinji Takagi

  • Cast: Joe Daniels, Houston Hayes, Tessho Genda

  • Genre: Animation

  • Rating: PG-13

  • IMDb Rating: 6.2/10
