Whether you subscribe to them individually or as part of a bundle deal, Disney+ and Hulu both have a lot to offer streaming fans. Disney has the ultra-popular Marvel and Star Wars franchises, while Hulu brings the heat with tons of original shows and movies from around the world, coupled with American TV shows from network partners. There’s a lot to watch, with new stuff added every day, so I picked out the three best choices for the weekend and the week ahead. We’ve got a compelling docuseries about online kids, raunchy comedy, popcorn fantasy, and more. The full list of TV shows and movies coming to the streaming services can be found below.
This Week on Hulu and Disney+: PCMag’s Picks
In The Lost Lands (July 4/Hulu)
Even with source material from George R. R. Martin, director Paul W.S Anderson can only make goofy schlock. That said, there’s fun to be had with In The Lost Lands. Most notable is Dave Bautista’s lead performance as bounty hunter Boyce, who is tasked with escorting a witch into a post-apocalyptic wasteland in search of a werewolf’s pelt to give to an evil queen. Pop some popcorn and turn your brain off for this one.
Director: Paul W.S Anderson
Cast: Dave Bautista, Milla Jovovich, Arly Jover
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Rating: R
IMDb Rating: 4.7/10
Born To Be Viral (July 8/Hulu)
Subtitled “The Real Lives of Kidfluencers,” the new docuseries Born To Be Viral embeds itself deep into the disquieting trend of underage video stars. Shot over five years, this in-depth project examines exactly what growing up in public is doing to young minds and their audiences. With unfettered access to some of the biggest names in pre-teen TikTok and Instagram, this should be a rough but necessary watch.
Director: Ines Novačić
Genre: Documentary
Rating: TV-14
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 17 (July 9/Hulu)
It is wild that Always Sunny has lasted this long, but the FX comedy about Pennsylvania dirtbags loosely operating a bar in between morally repugnant shenanigans just keeps on kicking. The seventeenth season promises more of the same, along with a crossover with Abbott Elementary that kicks things off. We’ll also get an episode about Frank in a coma, the gang betting on dog racing, and Mac and Dennis becoming EMTs. That’ll end well.
Director: Todd Biermann
Cast: Charlie Day, Rob Mac, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson
Genres: Comedy
Rating: TV-MA
IMDb Score: 8.8/10
