Byte-Sized Brief
- Social AI apps are unsafe for kids and teens.
- They often encourage inappropriate behavior.
- Experts say minors shouldn’t use them at all.
Common Sense Media is warning that social AI companions—apps designed to act like digital friends or partners—are too risky for anyone under 18. In a report released earlier this week, the nonprofit called these tools an “unacceptable risk,” citing disturbing examples where the AI encouraged harmful behavior, sexual content, and emotional manipulation. The apps tested included Character.AI, Replika, and Nomi.

Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots like ChatGPT, these companions are built to mimic real relationships, complete with feelings and memories. Common Sense Media says this makes them especially dangerous for teens, whose brains are still developing. In several cases, these AI “friends” supported bad decisions, offered graphic sexual roleplay, and even encouraged dangerous actions tied to mental health struggles. The group recommends no under-18 use, stronger age checks, and more research into the psychological effects of these products.
