- The latest Spotify for Android Auto also improved search and offline playback in the car.
Playlists are a big part of what makes Spotify great, which is why the company spends so much time adding features and making it better. Over the weekend, Spotify for Android Auto received a big update, including a floating search button for choosing songs and the popular Jam feature that lets friends add to the playlist queue.
If you don’t know about Spotify Jam, you’re not the only one. It’s an excellent feature that not enough people know about. With Spotify Jam, you can start a Jam on your phone, desktop, and now through Android Auto, then share a link or QR code with friends to join the fun. It’s essentially a shared playlist queue where subscribers can add their own songs to the list, making everyone a DJ.

It could be so much more fun.
Imagine going on a road trip with friends or family, but you’re stuck listening to a playlist from one passenger. With Spotify Jam, the entire car can throw their favorites into the queue and elevate the playlist. Thankfully, the driver or creator of the Jam still has creative control and can remove any songs they don’t want to hear, but where’s the fun in that?
Spotify Jam isn’t anything new, but this is the first time we’re seeing it for Android Auto. As long as you’re on the latest update to version 9.0.58.596, which started rolling out over the weekend, you should be able to start a Jam in the car. It’s worth noting that any friends in the vehicle who want to add to the list will need a Spotify account, but it works for free or paid subscribers.
The way it works is simple. Whoever wants to make a road trip more social can fire up a Spotify Jam. Then, the car infotainment display will show a QR code for other passengers to scan with their phone camera. From there, passengers can scan the code, join the Jam, and contribute songs to the playlist.
Earlier this year at Google I/O 2025, Google confirmed the feature would be coming to our vehicles, but didn’t share an exact timeline. Along with Spotify Jam, Android Auto is also set to get access to more video apps, games to play while in park, and more. Apparently some of those changes are rolling out right now.
With the latest release of Spotify for Android Auto, users can now start a Jam and turn an entire car of friends into one big DJ, and much more. We also noticed a new floating search button that makes it easier to find songs while on the go, and Spotify also improved the “downloads” section for offline playback.
