The Download
- You can schedule text messages on your iPhone using the built-in Shortcuts app.
- To schedule a one-time text, consider downloading a third-party app from the App Store.
This article explains how to schedule a text message to send later on your iPhone. Instructions apply to devices running iOS 12 and later.
How to Schedule a Text on iPhone
Because iMessage doesn’t allow scheduling of text messages for later, you’ll need a workaround.
You can use the Shortcuts app, preinstalled on iPhones with iOS 13 or later. If your phone runs an earlier iOS version, download the Shortcuts app from the Apple App Store.
While it’s free and comes preinstalled, the Shortcuts app can be slightly complicated. Here’s how to use it, in case this method suits your needs.
Prefer to download and use a third-party app instead of Shortcuts? Skip to the Delayed Texts section of this article.
Launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
Tap the Automation tab at the bottom.
If you’re new to creating automations, tap Create Personal Automations.
If you’ve created an automation before, tap the + in the top right corner, then Create Personal Automation.
In newer iOS versions, tapping the + takes you directly to Personal Automations options.
Choose the Time of Day option.
Set the time for when you want to send the message.
In the Repeat section, select Monthly and scroll to set the desired date for sending the message. Tap Next when done.
Scheduling messages this way creates a recurring monthly message. For a one-time message, delete or disable the automation after it sends.
Then, tap Add Action on the next screen.
In newer iOS versions, search directly for the Send Message action.
In the Actions menu, select a contact from the Send Message section, then tap Next.
Alternatively, tap Recipients in the preview window at the top.
Enter your message in the Message field and tap Next.
Review the New Automation for accuracy. Pay attention to the Ask Before Running option, which is enabled by default.
Toggle off Ask Before Running to allow the automation to run automatically.
Once satisfied, tap Done. The automation will then run based on the settings you configured.
This method sends the same text to the same person monthly. If that’s not your intention, delete the automation after it runs by swiping left on it and tapping Delete.
How to Send a Delayed Text on iPhone
For a delayed but non-recurring text message, using a third-party app might be the best option. These apps allow for one-time or recurring scheduled messages. Top-rated apps in the App Store include:
Each app functions differently, and while free to download, they include in-app purchases, meaning they may not be entirely free.
However, these apps typically allow you to create and schedule messages for anyone in your contacts or with a phone number.
Can You Schedule an iMessage?
