Byte-Sized Brief
- TalkBack with Gemini answers image questions.
- Expressive Captions show tone and emotion.
- Chrome reads scanned PDFs with OCR.
Google just announced a wave of accessibility updates for Android and Chrome. Gemini now works more deeply with Android’s TalkBack to let users who are blind or have low vision not only hear AI-made image descriptions, but also ask follow-up questions, such as what’s in a photo or what color something is. And Expressive Captions now picks up on how things are said, not just what’s being said, like drawing out the word “nooo” or tagging background sounds like whistling.
So, what’s new in Chrome? For starters, screen readers can now work with scanned PDFs thanks to built-in OCR. Chrome for Android is getting more readable with customizable Page Zoom that doesn’t mess up the layout. Google is also supporting new speech recognition projects in Africa, including open-source datasets in 10 languages and tools for developers.
