Google Wallet Now Supports Digital IDs in More Places

Byte-Sized Brief

  • UK users can add passports to Google Wallet.
  • Mobile IDs are now supported in more US states.
  • New privacy tech enables safer age checks.

Google is expanding how you can use your phone to prove your identity. In the UK, residents will soon be able to add digital ID passes to Google Wallet using their passports. These IDs could eventually be accepted for things like buying alcohol, depending on government approval. Google Wallet is also being rolled out to 50 new countries and is receiving updated privacy features.

In the US, digital ID support is expanding to four more areas: Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia. States like Arizona and Georgia will allow mobile IDs to be used at the DMV. With the REAL ID deadline approaching on May 7, travelers can use passport-based digital IDs at TSA checkpoints in select airports. Google is also testing a privacy-friendly age verification method called Zero Knowledge Proof in apps like Bumble. It confirms your age without sharing personal details, and Google plans to open-source the technology so others can build on it.
