11 Netflix Horror Comedies Guaranteed to Make You Laugh and Scream

11 Netflix Horror Comedies Guaranteed to Make You Laugh and Scream

The people who hate pineapple on pizza are crazy because mixing savory and sweet creates a killer taste. Every now and then, mixing two completely different things together creates something unforgettable. And that’s exactly what happens when you mix my two favorite movie genres: horror and comedy.

Good horror comedies make for some of the most entertaining films around, but it’s tough to find ones that deliver the right amount of both spookiness and silliness. Fortunately, Netflix has some hidden gems, and here’s a breakdown of their horror comedies guaranteed to make you both laugh and scream!

Day Shift

Release Year

2022

Runtime

1 hour 54 minutes

There are more vampire movies out there than you can shake a stake at. Fortunately, Day Shift is a bloody cut above the rest, telling the tale of a veteran vampire hunter who has to return to his union to fund his daughter’s expensive private school. Due to his notorious behavior, the union forces him to work the day shift, but this dead-end assignment heats up when he encounters a deadly new vamp with an old grudge.

Day Shift has plenty of action and some fun creature effects that will impress even the most jaded fans of fang-filled films. But the real appeal is the easy chemistry between leading actors Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco. These two always keep the comedy light and crackling, which keeps the plot about a vampire union (which admittedly feels like a weak attempt at John Wick-style world-building) from ever getting too serious.

The Addams Family

Release Year

1991

Runtime

1 hour 39 minutes

Netflix’s Wednesday show helped bring this kooky family back into the spotlight, so it’s only fitting they’re streaming the 1991 Addams Family movie. The plot involves a scummy family’s attempts to pass off an impostor as the real Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd). However, his hilarious actions with Gomez (Raul Julia) may just reveal this bald baddie as the real McCoy.

Campy, gothic humor drenches the entire film, and each character is perfectly cast. Aside from the mesmerizing male leads, there are standout performances from Anjelica Huston as Morticia and from Christina Ricci as Wednesday. Her iconic performance in this film and its sequel most certainly inspired Jenna Ortega’s captivating performance in Wednesday.

Just be warned: streaming this film means getting that catchy theme song stuck in your head for a week.

Constantine

Release Year

2005

Runtime

2 hours 1 minute

Constantine was an early example of Keanu Reeves making everything better. On paper, changing his titular ghostbusting detective from a snarky Brit to a grumpy American sounded dreadful to old-school comics fans. But Reeves quickly made the role his own, elevating the sillier plot beats and establishing a great rapport with costars Rachel Weisz and Shia LaBeouf. All in all, we are left with a film that appeals to any comic fans willing to give it a fair shake and those who are complete newcomers to this world of religious horror.

One standout performance comes from Tilda Swinton’s Gabriel, an angel who sneers at what humanity has become. And I’d be remiss not to talk up Peter Stormare, whose Lucifer is guaranteed to send chills up your spine. He steals every second of his brief appearance and even helps give this unconventional horror comedy an unforgettably epic climax.

8

Thanksgiving

Release Year

2023

Runtime

1 hour 47 minutes

I went into Thanksgiving thinking I would hate it. After all, it’s a Scream copycat movie based on a Thanksgiving-obsessed killer, directed by gross-out horror maestro Eli Roth. Honestly, this sounded like it would be bad on multiple levels. To my surprise, though, Roth tones down his gory excesses and delivers the best masked slasher since, well, Scream!

There’s a loose plot regarding the killings taking place one year after a Black Friday sales frenzy leaves multiple people dead and wounded. But Roth is less interested in critiquing capitalism and more interested in serving up seconds and thirds of red meat courtesy of a killer in a truly creepy mask. Throw in the fact that this movie stars both Patrick Dempsey and Addison Rae, and you have a horror comedy that, like Thanksgiving itself, brings multiple generations to the table.

7

The Babysitter

Release Year

2017

Runtime

1 hour 25 minutes

Horror is at its best when it keeps things simple. And it doesn’t get simpler than The Babysitter, a film about a young boy left in the care of (you guessed it) his babysitter. But when she turns out to be a member of a Satanic cult, he suddenly has to use all of his brains and all of the resources in his own home to stay one step ahead of a cadre of completely amoral killers.

The Babysitter is basically Home Alone reimagined as a horror film. Young Judah Lewis does a great job playing the resourceful hero, and Samara Weaving gives a standout performance as the babysitter who is out for his blood. The zippy dialogue provides regular laughs, all while the action gives us one over-the-top kill after another.

6

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

Release Year

2024

Runtime

1 hour 45 minutes

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice is a sequel that fans have waited decades to see. Michael Keaton reprises his role as the titular demon, and Winona Ryder returns to play Lydia Deetz once again. She’s busy raising a teenage daughter (Jenna Ortega) and navigating a loveless relationship, but the return of her would-be groom, Beetlejuice, threatens to unravel the life she has spent decades trying to build.

Speaking of building, this spooky sequel engages in a surprising amount of world-building. We learn plenty more about the Netherworld and even about Beetlejuice’s romantic past. The result is an uneven film that never reaches the height of the original, but I’ll always have a soft spot for films where directors like Tim Burton aren’t afraid to take a big swing.

Vampires vs. The Bronx

Release Year

2020

Runtime

1 hour 26 minutes

Horror films are filled with different kinds of heroes taking up arms against the vampires threatening them. Vampires vs. The Bronx changes things up by pitting the titular bloodsuckers against young children who will do anything to protect their neighborhood. Nobody will believe them about the threat, so they take things into their own hands, re-watching Blade to learn how to fight these demons (that’s my kind of homework!).

Older horror fans will enjoy the fact that Vampires vs. The Bronx is a bit like Monster Squad for a new generation. For that matter, older audiences will also enjoy the cameo by Method Man, who (along with Zoe Saldana) gives this film some veteran presence. But the focus stays on the child actors, all of whom capably confirm to even the most jaded filmgoers that the kids are, in fact, alright.

4

Little Evil

Release Year

2017

Runtime

1 hour 35 minutes

As a horror lover, have you ever asked yourself, “What if The Omen was funny?” Little Evil is a lighthearted film that answers that question, featuring two parents (Adam Scott and Evangeline Lilly) who worry that their son might be a little evil. When it turns out he’s worse than anyone could have ever expected, they might have to do the unthinkable in order to save the world.

Despite the somewhat apocalyptic stakes, this film keeps things breezy and funny. The core cast bounces off each other very well, and supporting actors like Donald Faison help to flesh out this quirky world. After the credits roll, though, you may never look at the creepy kids in your neighborhood the same way!

3

The Munsters

Release Year

2022

Runtime

1 hour 50 minutes

After delivering films like House of 1000 Corpses and the two Halloween reboots, the last thing anyone expected of Rob Zombie was that he’d bring The Munsters back to life. But the director’s passion shines through in a film that introduces these iconic characters to a new generation. How you feel about it, though, may entirely depend on how much you love the original show.

Zombie is clearly a fan of the source material, which is why he wrote a hit song about Herman Munster’s sweet ride. And that passion is evident in this film’s many scenes of hokey humor. The jokes may not be to everyone’s taste, but this benefits from being the rare horror comedy adult fans can share with their children.

2

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Release Year

2024

Runtime

1 hour 55 minutes

While Ghostbusters: Afterlife brought the franchise out of containment, Frozen Empire is an episodic adventure. Returning actors like Paul Rudd and McKenna Grace are joined by franchise newcomers Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani. However, it’s not clear if everyone combined will be enough to stop a new threat that intends to freeze the entire city.

Admittedly, this sequel gets cluttered, especially when the original Ghostbusters make their token appearance. However, it has all of the heart of Afterlife while expanding this off-kilter world and bringing us a new generation of spectral exterminators. After all this time, I’m pleased to report that busting still feels good and feels more like the franchise’s classic cartoon.
